Darrin Johnson is a Cincinnati man who faces hate crime charges over a 2021 assault in which he punched and threatened to kill an Asian-American student for bringing COVID-19 to the United States.
Johnson was arrested and charged Thursday in federal court over the Aug. 17, 2021, attack on the University of Cincinnati campus, just days before classes began.

He allegedly approached the Calhoun Street student and stirred up a storm of obscenity, the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio said in a press release.
“Go back to your country,” Johnson reportedly said.
“They brought COVID-19 here.”

Johnson then asked the student if he wanted to fight, CNN reported.
Although the student refused, Johnson punched him in the head, according to the indictment.
“The force of the blow caused the victim to fall and hit his head on the bumper of a parked car,” federal officials said.
The victim suffered minor concussions and lacerations to the face, among other injuries.
Two Good Samaritans witnessed the brutal attack and held Johnson until the police arrived.
Johnson was sentenced to 360 days in county jail in October last year after pleading guilty to felony assault and intimidation.
If convicted of hate crimes in federal court, Johnson could face the next 10 years behind bars.
