Police said 25-year-old Danny Hodgson was left unconscious after being shot and killed near the Perth train station on Sunday without warning.
Friends said Hodgson, a member of the Edith Cowan Joondalup college football club, walked into the Perth suburb of Northbridge early Sunday after a night alone to celebrate his team’s final game.
His alleged attacker, a 15-year-old boy, left the scene, police said.
Current Condition And First Signs of Recovery
Mr. Hodgson is in a medically induced coma with a skull fracture at Royal Perth Hospital.
His friend Steven Nelkovski told 9News that those close to Mr. Hodgson were devastated.
“He’s heartbreaking, Danny is the most positive person to meet,” Nelkovski said.
“So knowing that he’s having the fight of his life right now is really hard to understand.”
Suspect Arrested
A 15-year-old boy is charged with aggravated battery.
He will appear in Perth Juvenile Court on September 22.
ECU Joondalup head coach Kenny Lowe said everyone at the club was ‘devastated’.
What Was His Friend’s Statement?
Friends told 9News the 25-year-old spoke on Sunday but got worse on Monday and had to undergo four-hour surgery.
This has put additional stress on his family members in the UK who urgently need to be at his bedside.
His exemption from traveling to Western Australia was approved, but travel restrictions prevented him from traveling.
9News assumes that the family is making progress and that they can be on the plane tomorrow.
His coach, Kenny Lowe, said he was afraid to think about how Mr. Hodgson’s parents felt.
“I know how I would feel if my boy or girl were in this situation and they were so far away,” he said.
The teenager will be tried in juvenile justice this month.
