The drama, which is all too common in America, took place in a supermarket parking lot in Dolton, a Midwestern suburb of the city, on Saturday night.
The boy was in a booster seat in the back of the car, his parents in the front, and no one knew how he managed to get his father’s gun.
The boy “started playing with him in the car. Eventually the boy pulled the trigger,” local police chief Robert Collins told AFP.
His mother, Daejah Bennett, 22, was shot in the back of the head. She was taken to a Chicago hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Collins said the father was arrested while police investigated whether he legally owned the gun and should be charged.
Death is just one in a staggering array of similar accidents.
“Each year, hundreds of children in the United States have access to, or simply set aside, loaded, unsecured firearms in closets and nightstand drawers, in backpacks and purses,” and accidentally fire bullets, according to a recent report by Everytown For Gun Security.

The father of a 3-year-old boy who accidentally shot his mother in a suburb of Chicago over the weekend faces gun possession charges, the community police chief said Monday.
Dolton Police Chief Robert Collins Jr. said Romell Watson, 23, who was arrested after the shooting, will be charged with unlawful firearms. Collins said he will be charged with the charges and will be released Monday night.
The Associated Press was unable to locate Watson’s home phone number and he could not be reached for comment Monday. No online court transcript of his case could be found that would list an attorney for him.

Collins previously said investigators were working with the Cook County Attorney’s Office to determine the exact charges against Watson. There was no indication he fired the gun or even knew the boy was holding the gun at the time of Saturday’s shooting.
“We don’t have any evidence that the father fired the gun, so our lead is that the gun was his responsibility,” Collins said.
Collins said investigators had already determined that the father legally owned the gun but did not have a concealed carry permit he needed to carry it in the vehicle.
“He was legally authorized to possess the gun, but he transported the gun in a vehicle in a manner not required by law,” Collins said.
