Sky3 Pilot Died in Helicopter Crash
On 22nd November 2022, he and WBTV meteorologist Jason Myers were killed after their helicopter crashed just off the southbound lanes of I-77.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Tayag had more than five years of experience working for the news channel.
Chip is survived by Kerry Tayag, his wife.
They lived in Indian Land, South Carolina, a large enclave of Charlotte, North Carolina.
In a tweet about the accident, CMPD chief Johnny Jennings called it a “terrible day in Charlotte.”
In my eyes, the pilot is a hero, Jennings wrote in another tweet.
Witnesses said the pilot diverted his flight off the road to save lives.
“Due to his heroic actions, there were no other casualties or vehicles on the road involved in the incident.”
What Did WBTV Say About The Accident?
The news anchors, shocked once again to learn of the existence of their colleagues, saw the following statement floating around:
“The WBTV family is mourning a terrible loss.”
“Our Sky3 press helicopter crashed Tuesday morning with two of our colleagues on board.”
“Meteorologist Jason Myers and pilot Chip Tayag died.”
“We are working to comfort their families at this difficult time.”
“We appreciate the outpouring of support for our staff and your continued prayers for their families.”
WBTV hosts Jamie Boll and Molly Grantham recalled the pair after hearing the comment.
According to Grantham, the station delayed airing the news until just after 3 p.m. m. to give the wives and families of the men time to spread the word.
Boll claimed he last saw Tayag in the helicopter that morning as it prepared to pick up Myers after landing on the new station’s runway.
He went on to say that the two men’s smiles that appeared on the screen of their photos represented who they truly were on a daily basis.
How Did The Sky3 Helicopter Crash?
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have launched an official investigation.
A witness told WCNC Charlotte that the pilot appeared to be aware of his situation and made an “aggressive move” to prevent the helicopter from colliding with the busy freeway, which would have injured a large number of other people.
The man said, “I think I absolutely knew I had to take that off.”
“He went above and beyond to formulate it … Whoever the pilot was, they did everything to place it in a way that it wouldn’t hurt a lot of people and they did a fabulous job in that regard.”
