Chicken Prices Break All Previous Records in Pakistan

Chicken prices in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad hit an all-time high, with a kilogram of poultry meat selling for 700-705 rupees.

In addition, poultry farmers estimate that more than half of their operations have closed due to food shortages, leading to a major poultry crisis and rising prices.

This sparked significant public outrage, with citizens demanding swift government action to stem skyrocketing chicken prices. Farmers fear chicken farming could soon be phased out if the food situation continues, further increasing costs.

The closure of broiler feed mills, prompted by the government’s reluctance to allow imports of genetically modified soybeans, a key ingredient in poultry feed, is at the root of the food crisis. Wholesalers fear chicken meat could soon cost as much as 1,000 rupees a kilo unless authorities act quickly.

According to a survey by a local news site, chicken meat is more expensive in Rawalpindi and Islamabad than in other cities, with prices reaching 575 rupees per kilogram in Lahore and 580 rupees in Gujranwala.

Citizens called on the government to address the poultry situation and make the products more accessible and affordable to the public in light of these circumstances.
