Bulgaria Gets The Support Of The Main European Powers For Joining Schengen
As a key European player, Italy has backed Bulgaria’s ambitions to join the Schengen area.
Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani have spoken out in favor of Bulgaria’s entry into the visa-free zone to “make the EU’s external borders more secure”.
“We believe that with your commitment it will be possible to work on this. Bulgaria would be the EU’s external border and it would be possible to better identify traffickers in human beings, arms, and drugs. Only if we unite will it be possible to win the fight to protect human rights,” Tajani told a news agency.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the country has always supported Bulgaria’s entry into the zone.
“We have always supported each other; It is right that there is this compromise on important issues of our security and the migration issue. I hope that Bulgaria’s participation in the conclusion of this fundamental agreement will be even stronger and more active,” stressed the Deputy Prime Minister.
Bulgarian Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel welcomed the comments, viewing them as a crucial contribution to NATO’s eastern side security.
Bulgaria tried to join the Schengen area, but Austria blocked entry last December on the pretext of “problems with illegal immigration”.
The Federal Chancellery in Vienna stated that Austria maintains its veto against Bulgaria and Romania’s entry into the visa-free zone. SchengenVisaInfo reported this recently.

A few weeks earlier, the European Parliament had issued a new resolution stressing that the two countries had met all the necessary conditions to become new members of the Schengen area; The resolution was supported by a total of 526 MPs, while 57 opposed it.
