Brazilian Football Legend Pele Dies Aged 82
Legendary Brazilian soccer player Pelé has died at the age of 82 after a long battle with cancer.
The Brazilian icon, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, was hospitalized a few weeks ago with deteriorating health. The legend succumbed to his illness as he died peacefully in a hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil last night.
The 82-year-old is considered the greatest footballer to honor the beautiful game. He was instrumental in Brazil’s early successes, helping the national team win three FIFA World Cups.
He is the only player in history to win the mega event three times, 20 other players managed to win the trophy twice.
At the club level, Pelé won 6 national titles and 2 Copa Libertadores with the Brazilian club Santos. Pele is also credited with spreading the beautiful game across North America during his two-year stint with the American team New York Cosmos.
After achieving everything on the pitch, Pelé worked as an ambassador for the beautiful game around the world. While his great performances on the pitch will not be forgotten, his off-pitch contributions to the globalization of football will also be highlighted.
