Brad Pitt takes on Angelina Jolie in court
Hollywood star Brad Pitt is suing his ex-wife Angelina Jolie for selling her stake in a French winery, according to Reuters.
As the news outlet reported, the former couple jointly bought the winery where they got married.
He said Jolie sold her stake to a Russian businessman.
In a lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles, Pitt said Jolie broke her agreement not to sell her interest in Chateau Miraval without the consent of the others by selling her interest to a unit of the Stoli Group, a liquor maker owned by the oligarch Yuri Shefler is controlled.
The 2008 Oscar-winning couple had acquired a majority stake in Miraval, which is located in the south-eastern French village of Correns, between Marseille and Nice. They got married there in 2014.
Pitt, 58, said he “invested money and sweat” to make Miraval one of the most respected rosé winemakers in the world, with annual sales exceeding $50 million, the complaint said.
He accused 46-year-old Jolie of making “unearned windfall profits” from her work while causing “unprovoked harm”.
Jolie’s attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday.
According to the lawsuit, Jolie told Pitt in January 2021 that she made a “painful and disheartening decision” to sell her stake in Miraval and that she could no longer own a liquor store due to her personal objections.
According to the complaint, takeover talks between Pitt and Jolie collapsed five months later.
Tenute del Mondo, a privately held unit of Stoli, announced the purchase of Jolie’s stake in October.
The lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court seeks unspecified and punitive damages for breach of contract and other legal claims.
Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016 and their divorce became final in 2019. They have six children.
Pitt won Oscars in 2014 for his assistance in producing the best picture winner, 12 Years a Slave, and in 2020, for best supporting actor in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Jolie won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Girl, Interrupted in 2000.
