Austin Walsh, a Florida deputy sheriff, was fatally shot by his roommate, another deputy, over the weekend in what the sheriff described as a “tragic and entirely preventable death”.
Walsh was killed Saturday in Palm Bay by his roommate Andrew Lawson, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a video statement on Facebook on Sunday.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff, Deputy Austin Walsh, 23, was killed in an accidental shooting Saturday by his roommate, who is also another officer.
“I have to stand here this afternoon and speak about the loss of one of my officers who I love so dearly and the reckless actions of another of our officers who I also love,” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said.
The roommates were taking a break from playing video games with friends and chatting when Lawson “jokingly” pointed a gun at Walsh, which he believed was discharged, and pulled the trigger, Ivey said. A single bullet was fired, fatally striking Walsh, the sheriff said.
Lawson called 911 and said he accidentally shot his roommate, Ivey said. When officers arrived, they found Lawson “completely distraught and devastated.”

Lawson was taken into custody without bail on a manslaughter charge by Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers and taken to the Brevard County Jail on Sunday, Ivey said.
“Austin and Andrew were best friends and Andrew was absolutely devastated by what happened. Still, there is no excuse for this completely avoidable and tragic death,” Ivey said.
In a Facebook post, Ivey said Walsh served as a member of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years. Ivey said he liked both Walsh and Lawson and called the two MPs “good guys”. He called the shooting a “clearly stupid and avoidable accident.”
“My friends, this unnecessary and entirely avoidable incident not only took the life of an incredible young man and MP, but forever changed the life of another fine young man who made an extremely poor and reckless decision,” Ivey said.
