Asim Munir Appointed As New Army Chief of Pakistan
The government on Thursday ended the persistent rumors by revealing that Lt. Gen. Asim Munir had been chosen by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to succeed General Qamar Javed Bajwa as head of the Pakistan Army.
Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb tweeted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also appointed Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, using his constitutional authority to do so (CJCSC).
After receiving permission from the associated parties to select the officials for the senior posts, Prime Minister Shehbaz convened a federal cabinet meeting to discuss the senior appointments.
Sources say the federal government has confirmed Prime Minister Shehbaz’s election as army chief under the Pakistan Army Act later this month, despite his imminent resignation.
General Asim Munir Career
Lieutenant General Munir, who served as Pakistan’s spy chief and COAS, will succeed General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who will step down at the end of this month after six years as COAS.
Lt. Gen Asim Munir will be the most experienced person in selecting the new CJCSC and COAS. Although he received a two-star overall promotion in September 2018, he didn’t land the role until two months later. On 27th November when the current CJCSC and COAS remove their military uniforms, his four-year tenure as a lieutenant general would come to an end.
General Bajwa will decide whether to include his name and the Prime Minister will make the final decision as the proposals and decisions for the appointment of the two four-star generals are made a little earlier. He’s a great officer, but given the details, he could still be the classic dark horse.
Lieutenant General Munir enlisted in the Army and after completing the Officer Training School (OTS) program in Mangla, was deployed to the Border Force Regiment. He has been a close associate of the current COAS since serving as a brigade commander in the Northern Areas of Force Command under General Bajwa, who was then in command of X Corps. He was then appointed DG of Military Intelligence in early 2017 and Head of ISI in October of the same year.
However, his tenure as a senior intelligence official was the shortest in history, being replaced after just eight months by Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid at the behest of then Prime Minister Imran Khan. He was appointed Commander of Gujranwala Corps and served in that capacity for two years before moving to GHQ as Quartermaster General.
Lt. General Asim Munir‘s Net Worth
According to various news sources, the estimated net worth of Lt. Gen Asim Munir is around 20 Crore Pakistani Rupees.
