Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a groundbreaking initiative for farmers with the launch of the ‘Kissan Package’ and a solarization program for agricultural tube wells. This step will support farmers and increase agricultural productivity.
Farmers who own up to 25 acres of agricultural land can benefit from the solarisation scheme. The government will cover 67% of the project cost, leaving farmers to contribute the remaining 33%.
In the first phase, around 7,000 tube wells will transition to solar energy. The second phase, in collaboration with the federal government, plans to convert 10,000 more tube wells. The cost comparison is striking: running a tube well on diesel costs about Rs. 3,000 per acre, and electricity costs Rs. 1,500. With solar energy, the expense drops to just Rs. 50 per acre.

The Chief Minister has also directed the development of special packages for vegetable farmers. She emphasized creating a reliable supply management system for essential crops like onions and tomatoes, underlining the link between Punjab’s progress and the well-being of its farmers.
Farmers registered in the land registry can apply for this program until December 31, 2024. Subsidies for solarising tube wells are available in three categories:
- Rs. 500,000 for 10 kW systems
- Rs. 750,000 for 15 kW systems
- Rs. 1,000,000 for 20 kW systems
Farmers will need to cover the remaining expenses. For more details, they can contact the agriculture helpline at 0800-17000.
