Arrested in Romania
The former kickboxer rose to fame in 2016 when he was removed from the British TV show Big Brother over a video that appeared to show him attacking a woman.
He later rose to fame online and was banned from Twitter for saying women should “take responsibility” when they were sexually assaulted. He’s now reinstated. Despite being banned from social media, it has gained popularity, especially among young men, by promoting an ultra-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle.
He regularly appeared in videos driving a fleet of expensive sports cars, boarding private jets, and enjoying expensive vacations. Speaking to the BBC, a spokesman for the Organized Crime and Terrorism Investigations Department (DIICOT) said prosecutors had asked that the influencer be held in a “detention center” for an additional 30 days. A judge will rule on the application on Friday, the spokesman added.
The brothers have been investigated together with two Romanian citizens since April. During the detention hearing, the two brothers maintained their right to remain silent; That’s what his lawyer told the BBC.
“The four suspects … appear to have created an organized crime group with the aim of recruiting, harboring and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content for display on specialized websites for a fee,” DIICOT said in a statement press.
A video on social media showed Tate and his brother being taken out of a luxury mansion. A Tate spokesman told the Daily Mirror he could not give details of the arrest.
“However, Andrew and Tristan Tate have the utmost respect for the Romanian authorities and will always help and support in any way we can,” he added.
A tweet was then sent from Andrew Tate’s Twitter account alluding to the 1999 film The Matrix, which he regularly references in his posts. “The Matrix has dispatched its agents,” the post reads.
The account has also retweeted Matrix memes posted by Twitter owner Elon Musk. On Thursday evening, the Romanian Directorate for Investigations into Organized Crime and Terrorism issued a statement. However, the Tate brothers were not named as two British and two Romanian nationals were suspected of being part of a human trafficking ring.
The statement said officers had identified six people who had been “sexually exploited” by an “organized crime group”. Police claimed the victims were “recruited” by British citizens who they believe misrepresented their intentions to enter into a relationship with the victims, in what they dubbed “the loverboy method”.
They were then forced to respond to pornographic content under threat of violence, the statement said.
Police also released a video of the raid showing guns, knives, and cash in a room. Tate moved to Romania five years ago.
Rumors circulated online that police became aware of Tate’s presence in the country when he released a video aimed at environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
