Abu Dhabi is Launching A Special Creative Writing Programme

The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center (ALC) has launched the Qalam Creative Writing Program to develop writing skills in the Emirates. ALC aims to bring out more creative authors and writers in UAE.

This corresponds to the national reading month of the United Arab Emirates, March. The Qalam Creative Writing Program offers 3 workshops throughout the year under the supervision of renowned teachers.

Types Of Workshops

Novel Writing Workshop (From March 18th to September 1st)

  • Youssef Hatini, a Professor at the University of the United Arab Emirates, will lead the workshop.
  • It includes 10 face-to-face meetings at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.
  • It will cover the theoretical and practical elements related to novels.
  • Participants will learn the meaning of the story and how it is made.
  • Character development, storytelling, time, and space are taught.
  • The social dimension of language and the use of symbols are also discussed.
  • The participants get to know the storytelling pace and the levers and pitfalls of the storytelling style.

Poetic Writing Workshop (From September 1st to October 27th)

  • Aisha Al Shamsi, academic, critic, and poet, will lead this workshop.
  • 1 face-to-face meeting per week at the Kulturstiftung.
  • The workshop deals with questions about poetry and its forms.
  • Participants learn the rhythm of poetry and poetic writing techniques.
  • The practical applications of poetry writing will also be covered in the workshop.
  • Participants learn to check and correct texts.

Writing Workshop For Children (5 September to 7 November)

  • Fatima Al Mazrouei, doctor, writer, and editor in literature and criticism.
  • There is 1 face-to-face meeting per week at the Cultural Foundation.
  • The workshop begins with an introduction to children’s literature.
  • Participants learn the principles, elements, and techniques of writing and read various literary texts.
  • The session will introduce illustration techniques and discuss how to work with illustrators.
  • Participants learn practical applications for writing, proofreading, and editing stories and preparing them for printing.
