Frances Haugen is a former Facebook employee who turned out to be a whistleblower who provided the Wall Street Journal with private investigative work for its Facebook Archives project.
Haugen was a product manager at Facebook until May 2021 and worked for several large tech and social media companies during his 15-year career.
Haugen revealed her identity in an interview with CBS 60 Minutes on Sunday, 3rd October 2021.
As per her website, Haugen was born Neand raised in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of two teachers. She said on the website that she “grew up with her parents attending election rallies in Iowa and had a strong sense of pride in democracy and the responsibility of civic participation.”

Facebook Whistleblower Hearing: Frances Haugen Revealed Her Identity
On Sunday, 3rd October, a former Facebook Inc. employee emerged as a whistleblower who uncovered a host of internal company investigations that served as the basis for a series of Wall Street Journal investigations.
The leak sparked a Senate hearing and a new wave of criticism about the negative impact of the social media giant’s apps.
Frances Haugen appeared on the television show 60 Minutes on Sunday. She will testify before a Senate subcommittee Tuesday in a hearing titled Protecting Kids Online on the company’s research into the effects of Instagram on the mental health of young users.
Last week, a Facebook executive testified before US senators, contradicting the Journal’s characterization of the investigation.
As per her LinkedIn profile of hers, Haugen was a product manager at Facebook for more than two years. She also worked as a product manager at Google, Pinterest, and Yelp.
Haugen said she saw problems with other social media companies, but “it was much worse on Facebook than anything she has ever seen before.”
Frances Haugen’s Educational Career
As per her LinkedIn profile of hers, Haugen was on the Iowa City West High School debate team. She graduated from the school in 2002. Haugen then attended Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts, where she graduated from electrical engineering in 2006, as per LinkedIn.
As per her LinkedIn, Frances Haugen was a teaching assistant at Olin and the founder and co-editor of the Olin College Yearbook.
After graduating from Olin College, Haugen attended Harvard Business School, where she obtained an MBA in General Management in 2011. On her website, Haugen says: “Frances Haugen is committed to public control of the networks. social. We can have social networks that we enjoy and that bring out the best in humanity.”
Her Career
Frances Haugen’s first job after college was at Google as an Associate Product Manager. She said on LinkedIn that she worked at Google Books and Google AdWords.
She then worked as a product manager at Google from 2008 to 2009, designing Google’s first mobile reading experience/app and discovering and developing a book search algorithm and system for creating covers for 300,000 books in the public domain.
In 2011 she briefly left Google and returned as a software engineer and product manager. From 2012 to 2014 she worked on the Company Knowledge Chart.
She then worked as a product manager at Yelp from 2015 to 2016 and formed the quality team Photo. Before moving to Facebook in 2019, Haugen worked as a product manager at Pinterest from 2016 to 2018.
As per her LinkedIn profile of hers, Haugen co-founded the dating app company Hinge during her career in the tech world. She was a technical co-founder of the company in February 2011 and served as a technical director until August 2011.
She also said that she co-founded Secret Agent Cupid in 2010, who was a forerunner of Hinge.
