Jolidee Matongo was a South African politician who served as mayor of Johannesburg from 10th August 2021, until his death on 18th September 2021.
Newly elected Johannesburg mayor Matongo was killed in a car crash.
He was appointed mayor on 10th August and held the post for just over a month.

Jolidee Matongo Died in A Car Crash On The Golden Highway, Soweto
Matongo died in a car accident on 18th September 2021. He had been mayor for just over a month.
He campaigned in Soweto with President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gauteng Prime Minister David Makhura ahead of local elections scheduled for 1st November 2021.
A spokesperson confirmed the mayor’s death to News24. Two other sources in his office confirmed this.
A press release was expected on Saturday evening.
Educational Background
He obtained various qualifications, including a bachelor’s degree in technology in public management, project management, quality assurance, and public management and development.
His Professional Career
Matongo served as MMC for finances under Makhubo.
He rose through the ranks after serving as a member of the Soweto Student Congress and the South African Student Congress before becoming the ANC’s regional communications chief for eight years.
Additionally, as Chief of Staff, he was responsible for the overall operation and operation of MEC’s offices in Gauteng for the sports and economic development departments as well as agriculture.
He was a member of the Johannesburg ANC Regional Executive Committee for 18 years.
He entered the public service more than a decade ago.
The City of Joburg website states that Matongo is currently studying for a Master’s in Public Administration.

Matongo had accompanied President Cyril Ramaphosa to Soweto to promote the ANC ahead of this year’s local elections.
He was undisputed as mayor of Joburg and succeeded Geoff Makhubo, who died in July from the consequences of Covid-19.
