Donald Craighead Arrested Near DNC HQ With Bayonet & Machete
Police at the United States Capitol Building said Craighead was stationed near the Democratic National Committee headquarters, NPR reported.
They said he had a bayonet and a machete in his Dodge Dakota truck, and both are in D.C. illegal.
Police shared photos on Twitter showing their truck with interior and exterior views.
As per the press release, an officer from the Special Operations Division was on patrol when he saw the truck around midnight. He caught his eye because he wore white supremacist symbols and was outside the DNC headquarters.
In an arrest statement, Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said: “These are good and simple police services. We applaud the officers’ careful observation and the teamwork that led to this arrest.”
Capitol Police said the truck bore white symbols of supremacy, including swastikas, which can be seen in photos shared by police on Twitter. One was in a rearview mirror and the other in the truck.
The truck had an American flag on the back instead of a license plate.
As per the press release, he was arrested at Block 500 on South Capitol Street, SW.
Authorities say Craighead is from Oceanside, California. He was arrested for possession of prohibited weapons, NPR reported.
Protest
Police did not disclose whether Craighead had said anything about a planned Washington, DC protest at Capitol Hill for Saturday. The event titled Justice for J6 will take place on 18th September.
Participants protest against those detained for participating in the January 6 riot at the Capitol.
ABC News reported that authorities were planning to fence off the United States Capitol ahead of the protest. CNN reported that if the fence is approved, it will likely be smaller than it was after Jan.6. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will also host a security briefing to discuss preparations for the event; a source told CNN.
ABC News reported that all available Capitol Hill police officers would be on duty that day and the Washington Metropolitan Police Department would have a larger presence.
Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said of the protest: “We are closely monitoring September 18 and planning accordingly. After January 6, we made department-wide changes to the way we collect and share information internally and externally. I have no doubts that the work we are doing now will ensure that our officials have everything they need to keep everyone safe.”
