He says with relief that the happiest moment of his life has been the saddest.
“I don’t have the chance to celebrate or dream that you know my life is going to change,” he explained.

Mohammad Niazi Friend’s Statement
His friend Imran Naizi said Mohammad was ‘desperate’ to help his family and thought he was “one of the lucky ones” when he managed to secure a plane ticket.
“He was so excited to bring his family home,” Imran told me.
“I was very, very desperate. So desperate to travel to Azerbaijan, from Azerbaijan to Kabul … it’s almost three days / four days of travel.”
“You can imagine how desperate I was to go through all these Taliban checkpoints.”
Imran says Mohammad told him he would call him when he was in Afghanistan, but “he never did and it all ended with that”. It’s incredible.
He shared a house with Mohammad and took him to the airport to catch his flight.
“My heart is broken; there are no words,” he said.
“His car is outside my door. Your bedroom is opposite the living room. We see their stuff every day. Everything reminds us of it. We don’t know how to overcome it.”
“I worked 16 or 17 hours a day as a taxi driver to give them a better life. I was so happy every time I saved up for new clothes and toys. Everything was useful to his children to give them the best life of their life.”
“We have known each other for 14 years. He looked more like my brother than my friend.”
