Internet Outage Today 2021: World’s huge websites like NYT, FT, Reddit, Guardian, Paypal, Amazon back to life after Fastly glitch

Fixed a major server internet outage issue that caused thousands of news, social media, and government websites including Bloomberg, FT, Guardian, and today’s New York Times crash.

The problem has been confirmed to be an issue with US cloud computing service provider Fastly, which has identified and fixed a major glitch issue.

Amazon, CNN, Reddit, The Guardian, The Independent, BBC News, The Spectator, The Financial Times, and the UK government website were all down this morning.

Almost 21,000 Reddit users have also reported problems with the social media platform, while more than 2,000 have reported problems with Amazon. All affected websites returned after outages ranging from a few minutes to about an hour.

“The restoration of all services was monitored immediately and this incident was resolved,” said the company this afternoon.

“Our global network is back online,” said Fastly.

As one of the world’s most widespread providers of cloud-based content delivery networks, the company previously reported a failure due to a “service setup” and made no statement. The company, which went public in 2019 and has a market cap of over $5 billion, is helping websites move content down less congested routes so it can reach consumers faster.

“This global outage, which affects many leading companies, underscores the dependency we have on cloud services and their availability,” said Sergio Loureiro, Director of Cloud Security at Outpost24. This has a direct impact on a lot of companies, including Reddit, all of whose activities are based on their website.”

Was this Internet Outage Issue resolved Fastly?

The problem started just after 11 am and was largely resolved by noon.

“It is remarkable that a single blackout can wreak havoc on the world in ten minutes. It shows how moving to the cloud has changed the things companies need to protect,” said Mark Rodbert, Idax CEO.

Quickly run an “edge cloud” designed to reduce website load times and help you manage traffic spikes. Twitter users have speculated about the reasons for the problem, with Guardian reporter Alex Hern tweeted, “This technology inherently requires Fastly to be on the web between most of its customers and their users.”

Some sites, including the BBC, were able to restore services earlier than others by removing their systems from the Fastly network.
