Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif just announced some heartwarming news for families raising children with autism: Pakistan’s first-ever government-run autism school is almost ready in Lahore, and it’s designed to lift a huge financial weight off parents’ shoulders.
“Special children are our special heroes,” Maryam declared during a meeting, doubling down on her commitment to revamp special education centers province-wide. The autism school, now in its final construction phase, promises free treatment for kids and is set to open its doors in a record-breaking one year.

🔹 Autism Support Across Punjab:
While the flagship school wraps up, 10 autism units have already been set up in special education institutes in Punjab. To keep things on track, Special Assistant Sania Ashiq is personally overseeing the project.

🔹 Free Tools for Students:
Over 9,000 assistive devices have been handed out to special needs students, including hearing aids, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and white canes.
🔹 Schools Getting Major Upgrades:
35 special education schools have been upgraded, and 28 more are being transformed into “centers of excellence.” A brand-new curriculum for kids up to grade 5 is ready, complete with a version of the Holy Quran tailored for hearing-impaired children.
🔹 Jobs and Skills on the Horizon:
Skill-based courses are in process, and a job fair with private companies is planned to help differently-abled students land employment. So far, 25 out of 900 registered students have already secured jobs!
🔹 Tech Meets Education:
A School Information System and a smart monitoring app are being developed to streamline special education. Plus, 586 students from special centers have moved into mainstream schools.
Sports, New Buildings & More:
Maryam also announced Punjab’s first-ever grand sports gala for special students – think medals, cheers, and all the feel-good vibes. Eight new special school buildings are done, and nine more are greenlit for construction. Oh, and a new screening tool for slow learners has been rolled out to better support their needs.
