The Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology, led by Senator Kamal Ali Agha, met to address important issues. One topic was the inclusion of five senators in the Ministry of Science and Technology’s sub-institutions. Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui confirmed the files for these appointments are ready, but the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology has been dissolved, making board appointments there impossible.

Chairman Agha expressed concern about the ministry’s condition, pointing out that nine out of 17 sub-institutions lack permanent leadership. The minister shared that appointment recommendations for three institutions are with the Prime Minister.
Student housing at COMSATS University Islamabad was another focus. The rector explained that space limits prevent on-campus hostels, so students use private hostels nearby. Committee members criticized overcrowding in these hostels, urging the university to improve living conditions.

The committee also discussed plagiarism and the use of AI tools like ChatGPT in academic work. Officials said the university uses an HEC-provided plagiarism checker and has a zero-tolerance policy. On ChatGPT, they acknowledged challenges in preventing misuse and shared that faculty training programs are underway to promote ethical use.
The meeting emphasized the need for stronger leadership and strategies to balance technological advances with academic integrity.
