The UAE government have informed the travel agents that Pakistanis want jobs must now secure a police verification report before entering the country. This update came during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development on Monday.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis shared that around 700,000 workers have left for jobs abroad this year. During the briefing, it was clarified that Dubai imposes no restrictions on skilled labor, though there’s been a noticeable drop in demand for unskilled workers. The Secretary mentioned the importance of prioritizing skilled labor to meet international job market needs.

Committee Chairman Senator Zeeshan Khanzada raised concerns about unresolved issues affecting overseas job seekers. He pointed out that, despite meeting visa requirements, many applicants still face hurdles. The UAE remains an important destination for Pakistani joob seekers, but challenges persist, and people are eager for updates on solutions.

Senator Khanzada recommended compiling detailed records and involving Overseas Employment Promoters (OEPs) in future discussions to ensure proper oversight. He also stated the need for updates on market demand and a timeline to address these problems.
The discussion also touched on delayed housing projects for overseas Pakistanis. The Director General of Housing at the Overseas Pakistan Foundation (OPF) reported that the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has completed most of the work on one project, but some issues remain. Originally set for completion in 2008, the project is still unfinished, partly due to legal challenges. Senator Khanzada urged FWO to resolve pending liabilities and proposed involving IESCO for necessary connections to make the project operational.
Updates on airport immigration counters for overseas Pakistanis were also shared. Senator Nasir Mehmood stressed the importance of maintaining these dedicated counters, especially during departures. The Committee also discussed welfare concerns, including the plight of individuals unable to return to Pakistan after having their passports confiscated.
