Addressing concerns over the escalating cost of living, the Singapore government has announced a significant measure during Budget 2024 to provide relief to its residents. A 50% personal income tax rebate for the Year of Assessment 2024 (YA2024) has been announced, with a focus on easing the burden for middle-income earners.

The rebate, capped at S$200 for resident individuals, aims to alleviate the financial strain faced by many Singaporeans. It is estimated that this initiative will cost the government approximately $350 million.

Furthermore, starting from the assessment year of 2025, the income threshold for tax reliefs related to dependents will be raised from S$4,000 to S$8,000 annually.

Eligibility Criteria for the Singapore Personal Income Tax Rebate 2024

To qualify for the Personal Income Tax Rebate in Singapore for YA2024, individuals must meet the following criteria:

Tax Residency:

  • Be a tax resident of Singapore for YA2024, which includes Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents, and foreigners who have resided or worked in Singapore for at least 183 days in the preceding year (2023).

Taxable Income:

  • Have taxable income in YA2024 after deducting eligible deductions and reliefs, necessitating some level of tax payment.

The rebate amount will be 50% of the individual’s personal income tax payable for YA2024, capped at S$200. It will be automatically reflected in the Notice of Assessment (NOA) issued by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) later in the year.

Calculating the Rebate Amount

  • Identify the personal income tax payable for YA2024.
  • Calculate 50% of the tax payable.
  • Compare the result with the S$200 cap.
  • The rebate amount will be the lower of either 50% of the tax payable or S$200.

Payment and Application Method

Eligible individuals need not take any specific action to receive the rebate:

  • If the eligibility criteria are met, the rebate will be automatically applied and reflected in the NOA issued by IRAS.
  • The NOA will indicate the final tax payable after considering the rebate.
  • The rebate will not be issued as a separate payment but will be deducted from the final tax payable.
  • Individuals will either pay a reduced tax amount to IRAS if the rebate exceeds their tax liability or receive a smaller refund if their tax liability exceeds the rebate amount.
