Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer and has commenced treatment. Despite reigning for less than 18 months, he will temporarily suspend his public duties while maintaining his constitutional role as head of state.

The Buckingham Palace clarified that the cancer is unrelated to his recent treatment for a benign prostate condition, but did not specify the type of cancer the 75-year-old monarch is facing. During Charles’ treatment for an enlarged prostate last month, another health concern arose, requiring him to spend three nights in a London hospital.
“Diagnostic tests have confirmed the presence of cancer,” the palace stated.

“His Majesty has initiated a regimen of regular treatments, during which time doctors have advised him to defer public-facing duties. However, he will continue to fulfill state obligations and official paperwork as usual.”
King Charles is undergoing outpatient treatment, and the palace emphasized his positive outlook towards the process, expressing his eagerness to resume full public duties at the earliest opportunity. The decision to disclose his diagnosis was made to preempt speculation.
Charles ascended to the throne in September 2022 following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96.
