Indian Talent Soars: ICC’s Credibility Questioned with 34 T20I Wickets by No.1 Bowler
Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has surged to the top spot in the T20 International (T20I) bowling rankings, as per the latest update from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Bishnoi’s exceptional performance in the recent India versus Australia T20I series, where he secured nine wickets at an impressive average of 18.22 and an economy rate of 8.20 runs per over, contributed to India’s 4-1 victory.

T20I Bowling Ranking (06 December 2023)
Ranking | Player | Country | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Ravi Bishnoi | India | 699 |
2 | Rashid Khan | Afghanistan | 692 |
3 | Wanindu Hasaranga | Sri Lanka | 679 |
4 | Adil Rashid | England | 679 |
5 | Maheesh Theekshana | Sri Lanka | 677 |
6 | Sam Curran | England | 659 |
7 | Fazalhaq Farooqi | Afghanistan | 657 |
8 | Mujeeb Ur Rahman | Afghanistan | 656 |
9 | Akeal Hosein | West Indies | 655 |
10 | Anrich Nortje | South Africa | 647 |
What’s particularly surprising is Bishnoi’s rapid rise, considering he has only claimed 34 wickets in his T20I career thus far. This achievement sees him surpassing renowned bowlers such as Rashid Khan and Wanindu Hasaranga in the rankings.
Before the Australia series, Bishnoi held the 19th position globally with 603 points. Following his performance in the first T20I, where he conceded 54 runs for one wicket, his ranking surprisingly improved to 18th with 614 points.
It’s worth noting the remarkable records of players he surpassed – Rashid Khan, with 130 wickets in 82 matches, boasting a T20I career average of 14.80 and an economy of 6.16; and Wanindu Hasaranga, who has taken 91 wickets in 58 matches with a bowling average of 15.80 and an economy of 6.89.
Both Khan and Hasaranga have consistently outperformed Bishnoi throughout their T20I careers.
The perplexity surrounding Bishnoi’s elevation in rankings deepens when considering the notable careers of other bowlers. Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is, Shubman Gill in ODIs, and the sudden jumps in rankings for Maheesh Theekshana and Ishan Kishan have already raised questions among cricket enthusiasts.

Ravi Bishnoi, who represented India in the 2020 U-19 World Cup in South Africa, faced formidable opponents like Rohail Nazir, Haider Ali, Mohammad Hurraira, and Qasim Akram.
Despite this, questions are arising within the cricket community regarding the ICC’s ranking calculation methodology, particularly when it comes to certain players, leaving fans to ponder if there’s a different formula at play.
