ETA UK Latest News 2023

The United Kingdom government has introduced an electronic travel authorization (ETA) scheme for citizens of Qatar, marking a significant step towards advancing digitalization in travel and border controls.

As of October 25th, 2023, Qatari nationals are required to obtain authorization before traveling to the UK. The majority of applicants have opted to utilize the mobile app for the application process, according to an official statement from the UK government.

Jon Wilks CMG, the Ambassador to the State of Qatar, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of the electronic travel authorization scheme, emphasizing that Qatari nationals will be the first beneficiaries of this innovative system.

“I am pleased to announce the official commencement of the electronic travel authorization scheme for Qatari nationals, positioning them as pioneers in reaping the benefits of this initiative. This not only streamlines the travel procedures for Qataris visiting the UK but also underscores the robust bilateral relationship between our two nations. We eagerly anticipate welcoming more visitors from Qatar, thereby fostering stronger connections between our countries,” stated Ambassador Jon Wilks.

Looking ahead, citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan will also be required to obtain travel authorization if they plan to visit the UK from February 22, 2024. The application process for their ETA will be open from February 1st of the same year.

What does ETA UK mean?

The term “ETA” stands for Electronic Travel Authorization, and it represents a significant advancement over the existing Electronic Visa Waivers (EVW) commonly utilized by citizens of many Gulf countries. Priced at £10, the ETA offers enhanced advantages compared to the EVW, enabling unrestricted visits to the UK for a duration of two years or until the passport expires, depending on which comes first.

This transition to the ETA system eliminates the need for a visa when making short visits to the UK for individuals from the Gulf region and Jordan.

To obtain an ETA, individuals are required to furnish personal and biometric information and respond to inquiries pertaining to their suitability and criminal background. This meticulous process is designed to prevent entry into the UK for individuals with criminal backgrounds. Once the application is approved, the ETA is digitally linked to the applicant’s passport for streamlined verification.

While the standard processing time for applications is typically three working days, a significant number of applicants have reported receiving decisions within just a few hours.

According to official statistics, the UK hosted nearly 800,000 visitors from the Gulf region last year, with 45,000 of them originating from Qatar.
