Iqbal Day Celebration: Pakistan Government Declares Public Holiday on November 9
The interim federal government of Pakistan has announced a nationwide public holiday on November 9th to commemorate the birth anniversary of the celebrated national poet and philosopher, Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
The official declaration was made through a notification, which stated, “In accordance with the Cabinet Division’s circular No. 10-01/2022-Min-II dated December 23, 2022, it is hereby announced for the general public that November 9 will be observed as a public holiday across the country on Iqbal Day.”
Born on November 9, 1877, in Sialkot, Allama Iqbal occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of Pakistanis. His early education began in a traditional maktab, and he later attended the Sialkot Mission School, where he successfully completed his matriculation exams. He continued his academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Government College, Lahore, in 1897, followed by a Master’s Degree.
Throughout his career, Allama Iqbal served as a lecturer in history, philosophy, and English at Lahore’s Oriental College. He was a visionary thinker who played a vital role in inspiring the Indian subcontinent’s Muslims, especially the youth, to strive for independence from British colonial rule and demand a separate nation.
Although Allama Iqbal did not live to witness the fulfillment of his dream of a separate Muslim nation, his legacy endures. He passed away on April 21, 1938, yet his words and philosophy continue to inspire successive generations.
