Akyol made his debut as a writer with a short story titled Zero Impact, featured in the WTF Bundle titled Growing up after 9/11. This story revolves around the experiences of young people coming of age in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York.
His first novel, Eus, was published in October 2012 by the Prometeo publishing house. The book tells the story of a Turkish-Dutch boy from a guest worker family who strives to break free from his cultural background. It is widely considered a semi-autobiographical work.
