From December 2016 to December 2018, he served as the Inspector-General of the Frontier Corps in Balochistan, playing a key role in maintaining security. His responsibilities covered the western border, the Line of Control (LoC), and critical areas in Balochistan.

Director-General of ISI

In October 2021, the Prime Minister’s Office announced that Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum would take on the role of Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), replacing Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed. He officially assumed office in November of that year.

This decision stirred up considerable discussion and tension, largely due to then-Prime Minister Imran Khan’s hesitation in confirming the appointment, which put a strain on civil-military relations. While the appointment of the ISI chief isn’t explicitly laid out in the Constitution or Army Act, it has traditionally been seen as the Prime Minister’s decision.

Early in October 2021, the Chief of Army Staff presented three candidates to Prime Minister Imran Khan for the role. Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum’s selection had already been made public by the DG ISPR, but the formal notification from the Prime Minister’s office didn’t come until October 26.

Imran Khan expressed a desire to consult further on this key appointment, leading to speculation about whether he intended to interview potential candidates. Although Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry denied these claims, he reassured the public that the proper process would be followed.

The situation caused a three-week stalemate over the appointment, which was finally resolved through discussions between civilian and military leaders.

Later in December 2021, Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum instructed authorities to refrain from sharing pictures or video footage from official meetings with the media.

Press Conference of October 2022

In a significant moment, DG ISI Nadeem Anjum took to the podium alongside DG ISPR Babar Iftikhar during a press conference at the ISPR’s Rawalpindi office. This was the first time an ISI chief has addressed the media directly, discussing key issues like “Lettergate,” the death of Arshad Sharif, the failed assassination attempt on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and the military’s backing of Shahbaz Sharif amid claims of General Bajwa’s role in Khan’s removal. He also touched on Khan’s Azadi March in 2022.

Regarding the “Lettergate” situation, Anjum explained that during the National Security Committee meeting, he made it clear that no evidence was found to support a foreign plot to topple the PTI-led government. Interestingly, the cypher at the center of the controversy was confirmed as authentic during a National Security Council meeting. This led to a strong diplomatic protest issued to the Acting US envoy in Islamabad, reflecting a joint stance from both civil and military leaders against what they viewed as interference in Pakistan’s affairs.

Retirement Date And Extension

In September 2023, Nadeem Anjum’s tenure as ISI chief was extended for one year, making him the third ISI chief to receive such an extension after Akhtar Abdur Rehman and Shuja Pasha.
