Meta Unveils ChatGPT Integration for WhatsApp and Instagram Users
Meta has officially entered the arena of AI chatbots, marking its debut with the launch of a virtual assistant and a cohort of AI personalities slated for integration into WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger.
Meta’s vision for this virtual assistant is one of versatility, capable of performing a multitude of tasks. These include facilitating group travel plans within a chat and addressing queries that would typically be directed toward a search engine.
One standout feature of Meta AI is its image generation capability, reminiscent of Midjourney or OpenAI’s DALL-E. By simply invoking the “/imagine” command, it can swiftly craft captivating, high-resolution images within seconds. Remarkably, this image generation feature, like all of Meta’s AI functionalities introduced recently, is entirely free for users.

In tandem with the introduction of Meta’s virtual assistant, the company is debuting a roster of 28 AI characters across its messaging platforms. These characters draw inspiration from celebrities such as Charli D’Amelio, Dwyane Wade, Kendall Jenner, MrBeast, Snoop Dogg, and Paris Hilton, among others. Some of these characters are designed with specific roles in mind, such as a travel agent character.
An intriguing innovation lies in what Meta’s Al-Dahle describes as “embodiments” within these characters. While engaging in conversation with one of them, their profile image subtly comes to life, responding to the dialogue. This creates a more immersive experience compared to traditional 2D chatbots.
As of now, Meta AI is not trained on public user data from Instagram and Facebook. However, it seems likely that such integration is on the horizon. This opens up exciting possibilities, such as asking it to “show me reels from the south of Italy,” a compelling use case that sets it apart from other chatbots.

The exact timeline for the rollout of Meta’s AI on Instagram and Messenger remains uncertain, but it appears that WhatsApp will be among the first platforms to embrace it.
Notably, there are already signs of Meta’s AI presence in WhatsApp. The WABetInfo team has observed a significant update in the messenger’s app beta version, indicating that the AI chatbot is poised to make its debut on WhatsApp in the near future.
