PPP Announces Suspension of Lawyer Latif Khosa’s Party Membership
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has taken the decision to suspend the party membership of senior leader Advocate Latif Khosa. This action comes after Khosa failed to respond to a show-cause notice issued to him by PPP Secretary-General Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari on September 13. The notice had been served to Khosa due to his representation of Imran Khan, the leader of another political party called Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in various court cases.
Khosa, who held a position in the PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), was criticized by his own party for defending Imran Khan without prior approval from the PPP leadership. The cases in question involved corruption charges against Imran Khan and a case under the Official Secrets Act. Additionally, the notice expressed disapproval of Khosa’s speech at a lawyer’s convention in which he reportedly criticized government policies regarding classified information.
The show-cause notice had requested Khosa to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for working against the party’s policies. It stipulated a seven-day response deadline, failing which his PPP membership would be revoked.
Advocate Latif Khosa, who previously served as Punjab governor during the PPP’s federal government tenure from 2008 to 2013, had been representing Imran Khan in various legal cases, including the Toshakhan case, which led to Imran’s imprisonment in August.
Khosa, known as one of Pakistan’s prominent legal figures, expressed his determination to lead a lawyers’ movement in response to what he described as the mistreatment and humiliation faced by lawyers. He emphasized the need for transformative change and highlighted the challenges lawyers have been encountering.
In a separate incident, Khosa and other individuals, mostly lawyers, were trapped in a malfunctioning elevator at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) building for approximately 40 minutes. Khosa viewed this incident as an attempt to intimidate lawyers and drew parallels between their suffocation during the elevator ordeal and the challenges faced by the Pakistani population over the past 18 months.
