Türkiye: Mother Of Two Dies After Botched Weight Loss Operation
A mother of two died during a botched weight loss procedure in Turkey because doctors failed to stop internal bleeding, according to a coroner’s report.
Three weeks after her engagement, 44-year-old Emma Morrissey flew in to have a gastric sleeve fitted.
He left the country because, according to the investigation, he was not entitled to free surgery on the NHS or the cost of private surgery in the UK.
On July 8, 2013, the procedure was expected to last three hours, but her fiancé Jonathan Burt received the heartbreaking news that it would take longer than expected due to complications.

The private hospital told Emma’s family that the procedure to treat the bleeding had been canceled but had actually continued.
The death certificate presented by Turkish doctors stated that the cause of death was a natural death, cardiac arrest.
However, coroner Jacqueline Devonish concluded at Cheshire Coroner’s Court in Warrington: “If the bleeding had stopped at the time of discovery, Emma would have survived.”
There is evidence that Emma underwent the procedure and had her stomach stapled, he continued.
The clotting factors and platelets present in Emma’s treatment were not enough to stop the bleeding.
The coroner gave the cause of death as “shock and bleeding due to ruptured ligaments due to gastric sleeve surgery,” which disagreed with the Turkish death certificate.
Her fiancé paid tribute to her, saying she was “one of those people you just had to meet for five minutes and she would be your friend.”
“Everyone loved him,” Jonathan said.
The independent pathologist Dr. Mark Lord told the hearing that Emma, from Birchwood, Cheshire, would not have died if surgeons had canceled the procedure and stopped the blood loss as soon as it was first noticed.
He explained that Emma’s body had not been subjected to an autopsy in Turkey and there was no evidence that she had been embalmed to British standards.
Emma was an extraordinary person who touched the lives of everyone she met, her family said in a statement. She always put the needs of others before her own. She always offered help to those who needed it because she had a heart of gold.
“Emma was a loving mother, dedicated wife, sister and companion.”
“She always had a smile on her face and loved spending time with her family and friends.”
