Punjab Will Resume “Murgi Pal Scheme” Soon
Punjab’s interim government has approved the resumption of the poultry project in the province initiated by Pakistan’s previous government, Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The Government of Punjab has requested detailed information on the Poultry Research Institute (PRI) program.
The PRI had asked the Punjab government for permission to resume the Murghi Paal Scheme with its own support without applying for government subsidies and the request was granted.
As part of this plan, the PRI will unveil a comprehensive program detailing all the details of the program, including buying, selling, and supplying chickens, as well as a free training course for individuals. This detailed program will be available from the second week of August.
The practical restoration of the chicken rearing program is expected to begin next month, with the rearing process beginning at 12 poultry centers across the province. The distribution of the chickens to the public will then begin in October.
According to senior PRI sources, the new Murghi Paal Scheme will offer a set of five chickens and a rooster priced at Rs 1,250-1,300. This is a slight increase from the previous cost of 1,200 Rupees for five hens and a rooster.
In addition to the poultry feed, the PRI launched tenders for the purchase of 50,000 100 kg bags of birdseed.
The chicks are raised in 11 poultry centers in different cities in Punjab including Rawalpindi, Attock, Deena, Gujrat, Sargodha, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Bhakkar. These chicks are then distributed to the people who wish to benefit from the program.
It should be noted that this initiative will not incur any costs for the provincial government as the Institute plans to fund the project from its own resources. The move is expected to boost the department’s revenue while ensuring residents can enjoy fresh Desi eggs delivered to their doorsteps daily.
The chickens raised at PRI Poultry Farm are a cross between three or four breeds of chicken, with the best chicken being a cross between Royal Broiler and Pure Punjab Broiler.
Each year, a hen produces between 230 and 240 eggs, and the hens’ feed consists of leftover fruit and vegetables from the kitchen, used tea leaves, leftover roti, and rice, according to the institute. These chickens are known for their resilience and survivability in both hot and cold weather conditions.
