After India Releases Water, NDMA Issues “Low Tide” Warning For Ravi River
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a new “low flood” warning for the Ravi River after India released around 185,000 cubic meters of water from the Ujh Dam.
The NDMA has urged the administration and relevant departments in the vulnerable area to step up their preparations as it warned the main flood of about 65,000 cusecs is expected to hit the area in the next 20 to 24 hours.
The agency said light flooding could occur in flood-prone areas in Punjab’s Yassar region. Last year, Indian authorities dumped 173,000 cubic meters of water into the Ravi River. He said that according to the Ravi River flood limits, the likely impact is in Yassar and that “light flooding” is expected in the flooded areas.
The agency said the local government was closely monitoring the situation through July 20. In addition, he advised the public to inform themselves and to follow the guidelines of the responsible administration.
Gujrat Deputy Commissioner said severe flooding in Gujrat could affect 59 villages, a seasonal event after monsoon rains in the river basin.
The Chenab River flows at a rate of 122,000 cusecs in Marala and minor flooding occurs. There is a chance that 170,000 cusecs of water will flow in the next 24 hours. Near Nowshera, the water also flowed at a speed of 63,000 cubic seconds.
The Irrigation Board said that the water situation in the Sutlej River is normal. He said that the water inflow at Islam Headworks is 3319 cusecs while the outflow is 2335 cusecs. According to the district administration, people in low-lying areas are warned of possible flooding.
Meanwhile, local government and relief organizations have taken precautions to deal with any adverse situation. Water levels in the Ravi River have risen as flood warnings have been issued in Hafizabad and Narowal and relief camps have been set up at various locations along the rivers and canals.
In addition, there is a possibility of heavy rains in Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal, with a risk of flooding in the Sutlej River and its associated tributaries, including the Bhimber, Deg, Palkho, and Basantar.
