In The UAE, You Can Be Fined $136,000 For Using Obscene Language Online

The United Arab Emirates prosecutor’s office has warned people against using obscene and defamatory language online. Violators face severe penalties, including imprisonment and a fine of up to US$136,000 (AED500,000).

These regulations apply to all forms of electronic communication, including social media and messaging platforms.

Prosecutors have said that severe penalties will be imposed on those who use obscene language online toward public servants on duty. The penalty is imprisonment or a fine of between AED 250,000 and AED 500,000.

The crime is regulated by Article 43 of Federal Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Electronic Crime and Rumors.

The agency has also launched a new initiative called “Waey,” which aims to increase public knowledge of the country’s criminal laws.

Waey will present various projects designed to promote positive behavior and foster a culture of inclusion, such as media literacy, legal advice and community engagement.

It will also monitor any negative social behavior that may harm the values of Emirati society and launch awareness campaigns to mitigate its negative impact.

In addition, Waey will use media and technology to ensure all groups in society hear his message, especially youth.
