In 2010, RAOUL Moat was involved in a shooting that left one dead and two others suffering the consequences of their actions.
Here we take a look at Samantha Stobbart, whose shooting in Moat shocked the nation.
Raoul Moat’s Ex-Girlfriend
Moat and Samantha Stobbart dated for six years prior to the attack.
Although aspiring stylist Stobbart began dating karate instructor Chris Brown while Moat was still in prison, the couple had a four-year-old daughter.
The couple met when they were just sixteen and were formed by school friends, according to Samantha’s sister Claire Burdis, speaking in a 2011 interview with the Daily Star.
According to Ms. Burdis, Samantha told Moat that she was dating a cop because she was “scared of Raoul” and wanted him to leave her alone, leading Moat to want “revenge” while he was in prison.
Six months before the attack, Brown had moved to the Windsor, Berkshire area.
In 2011, a court heard testimony about how Moat became obsessed with the idea that Stobbart had moved on because of her relationship with another man.
Moat also had a longstanding animosity towards the police, whom he blamed for the failure of his business.
What Happened To Her?
Moat, 37, shot dead his ex-girlfriend Samantha, then 22, in a vicious attack in Birtley, Gateshead on July 3 at the window of a friend’s house.
When she arrived at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, she was already in critical condition.
As a result of the attack, Samantha was listed as non-critical on July 5, 2010, and was discharged from the hospital on July 17.
The next day he made a direct appeal to Moat, who had fled, saying: “Please come together. You wouldn’t act like this if you still loved me and our son.”
Two days before the attack, Moat had just been released from Durham Prison after serving an 18-week sentence for assault.
The gunman shot and blinded PC David Rathband, then 44, as he sat in his squad car in Newcastle the day after the first shooting.
