Sindh Govt Declares Fares Increase For People Bus Service
The Sindh Government has decided to increase the prices of its popular bus service in response to the recent rise in fuel prices.
After inspecting the ongoing construction of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Karachi on Saturday, Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon made the announcement to the media.
Speaking to the media, Memon said the Sindh Government had no choice but to increase fares on the People’s Bus Service.
“Due to inflation in the country and the increase in the price of diesel, it is almost impossible to maintain operating costs,” he added.
The transport minister went on to say that fares would be increased gradually, taking into account the difficulties faced by the average citizen.
It is important to note that the Popular Bus Service project now operates three different types of buses: red buses for all passengers, pink buses for women only, and white electric buses.
With the exception of the bus service from Merewether Tower to Gulshan-e-Hadeed, which charges a maximum fare of Rs 100 due to the longest route, these buses in Karachi charge a flat rate of Rs 50 for each trip.
In June last year, PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari introduced a bus service in Karachi for the first time.
