WhatsApp Groups Get A Self-Destruct Option
In 2020, WhatsApp added a disappearing messages feature, but it only applied to one-on-one chats. An Expiring Groups feature is currently under development that was discovered in the TestFlight app running WhatsApp Beta for iOS 23.5.0.070.
This was discovered and reported by the WhatsApp feature tracking blog WABetaInfo.
This feature can be accessed through the group settings and users can select an expiry time ranging from a day, a week, or a custom date as shown in the attached screenshot.
It’s important to note that this feature only applies to your own messages, even if you’re in the group settings. Unless other members of the group have also set expiration dates, your messages are still visible in the group.
However, you can always turn your messages back on, and WhatsApp will ask you to confirm before deleting them, even if you forgot. The app also prompts you to clean your pools on the due date.
This feature could be a useful tool to clean up your WhatsApp account by automatically deleting old irrelevant groups and freeing up disk space.
Please note that this feature is currently only available in the beta version and it is not clear when it will be implemented in the stable version.
