Ian Falconer’s Cause Of Death

Ian Falconer, the 63-year-old author, and illustrator of the acclaimed Olivia children’s book series about a smart and ambitious little pig have died.

It is not known what caused the death.

In addition to his successful writing career, Falconer has also worked as a set and costume designer for renowned theater and opera companies around the world, including the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France, and the Royal Opera in London, England.

From 1996 he also produced the covers of The New Yorker. Through this work, Falconer was discovered by Anne Schwartz, then an editor at Simon & Schuster, who asked him to write a children’s book for the masthead.

The author’s niece, Olivia, inspired Olivia’s first book, to which Falconer responded by giving it to Schwartz.

Seven sequels to Olivia’s first children’s book from 2000. According to NPR, the series was a New York Times bestseller and has sold more than 10 million copies.

Schwartz spoke about his initial reaction to Falconer’s draft of Olivia’s first book in an interview with NPR: “It was immediately clear that this was something really unique. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen I thought, I’m lucky here I think.”

He specifically mentioned how completely original the drawing and coloring style was, saying: “The fact that the entire book was red and black in an era when picture books were in color, was one of its many unique qualities, something so bold and visual.”

She continued, “There was also this incredible Olivia character that really jumped out of the pages. With every picture, she knew the kids could connect with her.”

‘Two Dogs’, a children’s book about two dachshunds who run away from home for a day of elaborate adventures, was published by Falconer last year.
