Brown said on Wednesday: “We always ask that you respect this family. We’ll have more information on this offer later, but for now, we’re keeping family comfort in mind by releasing more information about the official offer.”
“This is a family of civil servants and as you can imagine they take this tragedy very seriously,” Brown added.
“He died protecting Chicago and its residents,” the police department said in a statement Thursday.
“We will never forget his selflessness and dedication as we continue to embrace his family and loved ones. Together we mourn our hero.”
Several Chicago police officers and EMTs lined the streets Wednesday night escorting an ambulance carrying the late official’s body from Mount Sinai Hospital to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities report that at 4:43 p.m. M. Wednesday, the Eighth Precinct Police Department responded to a domestic call about a person brandishing a firearm at the 5200 block of South Spaulding Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood.
When police arrived, a group went to the front door of a house, but the suspect was spotted on foot by a second police patrol, authorities said.
The armed suspect began running as officers exited the police vehicle, authorities said.
Gunfire was exchanged at close range, according to Brown. According to the authorities, the officer was beaten several times.
According to Brown, the officer returned fire, hitting the man in the head. The victim was then taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
According to Brown, the officer was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“The investigation is ongoing,” Brown said, noting that body camera footage, ballistics evidence, and other videos are currently being reviewed. In addition, the use of force in the incident is being investigated by the Civilian Police Accountability Office, Brown said.
