Stephanie Slater, a real estate agent, attended a real estate show like any other business day.
Unbeknownst to her, the man posing as a potential buyer was one of Britain’s most notorious kidnappers.
What Happened To Stephanie Slater?
Stephanie, 25, attended a viewing of a property in Birmingham with a prospective buyer on 22nd January 1992.
Michael Sams, the man posing as the buyer, kidnapped her with a knife.
He then took it to his studio in Newark-upon-Trent, Nottinghamshire.
She was about to face an ordeal that would shape her for the next two decades.
Sams handcuffed, gagged, and blindfolded Stephanie and placed her in a coffin-like box.
The box was then placed in a garbage can and sealed.
Her captor rarely let her out to feed and keep her alive.
As she was allowed out of her boxy prison, she realized she had to do something to stay away.
She tried to develop a relationship with the depraved Sams by starting conversations with him so he wouldn’t see her as a disposable object to kill and throw away.
Her captor took her home and left her two streets away after she fled the police to collect the £175,000 ransom he had demanded from her employers.
She had been gone for eight days.
Stephanie was unable to walk or see due to the shackles she was confined in.
Her testimony helped police arrest and convict Sams for the kidnapping and murder of a Leeds teenager.
Sams later admitted to police that killing the teenager was “practice” for kidnapping the agent and that he had no intention of collecting the ransom.
His only goal was to kill him.
When Did Stephanie Slater Die?
Stephanie died in 2017 after a battle with cancer.
He fell ill near his home on the Isle of Wight.
In the years leading up to his death, he wrote a book called Beyond Fear, which was later adapted into a TV movie.
Her courage and openness about her ordeal raised awareness and empowered victims of similar ordeals to move on.
