What Were The Details Of An Incident?
The flames erupted just before 5:30 a.m. on the second floor of the home on Howard Avenue in Brownsville. The victim’s uncle, Joseph Thompson, said Payton Thompson was in his third-floor bedroom when the fire broke out.
Ten family members were asleep in the home when the fire broke out and choking smoke filled the home. Fighting the flames, firefighters faced heavy traffic jams. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
“She was the last to come out and unfortunately she didn’t come out,” he said.
“The smoke entered his body, surrounded his heart, so he didn’t survive.”

“No parent lives in the hope of burying their child. Our family was hit several times. Not like that, this is the first time,” Thompson said.
The heartbroken uncle, a chef, called Payton an “amazing guy” who loved to sing, dance, and eat. “He loved his Uncle Joe’s ribs and cornbread,” she recalled. The gruesome twist of tragedy is that Payton died on the same day that her little sister Lauren celebrated her first birthday.
“It was hard. We didn’t get to celebrate her life the way we wanted, but we’re glad Lauren is still alive. Unfortunately, we couldn’t celebrate. First birthday, you’re growing up, and we couldn’t.” We will, though,” Thompson promised.
