The identities of two of the four people who died when two helicopters collided in mid-air include two Britons.
Three other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after the collision on Main Beach near Sea World on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Witnesses observed “flying debris” and heard a “loud noise” after seeing the two helicopters collide, according to 9News.
The Foreign Office announced tonight that two of the victims were British nationals and that all of the deceased was believed to have traveled in the same helicopter (Monday 2 January).
A spokeswoman said: “We are working with local authorities and supporting the families of two British citizens who have died in Australia.”
Queensland State Police Acting Inspector Gary Worrell said the accident is believed to have happened as two helicopters were taking off and landing.
One helicopter was hit by another as it flew over the ocean shortly after takeoff, footage of the tragic event shows.
According to Worrell, “Members of the public and police attempted to evacuate the victims, began administering first aid, and attempted to get these individuals to safety from an overturned cell.”
“[People on] jet skis, family boaters, ordinary members of the public rushed out to help these people.”
Independent of neighboring Sea World, Sea World Helicopters said it was helping to investigate the tragedy and expressed regret at the news.
