He also tried his hand at acting, making his screen debut on Game of Thrones as Ser Ilyn Payne.
Wilko had previously been told he had end-stage pancreatic cancer, but in 2014, after an 11-hour operation to remove a tumor, he thanked medical staff for “curing” him.
His death was announced on 23rd November 2022 on the band’s Twitter page.
“This is the announcement we never intended to make, and it is with a heavy heart that we make this: Wilko Johnson has passed away,” the statement said.
“On Monday, November 21st, he died at his home. Thank you for respecting the family’s privacy at this very difficult time. Goodbye Wilko Johnson.”
When Wilko was cast in the 2011 season of Game of Thrones, he made his acting debut.
In seasons one and two, he played the dumb executioner Ser Ilyn Payne.
The Halstead Gazette quoted Wilko as saying, “They [the producers] said they wanted someone really creepy to look at people with daggers before killing them.” Wilko was cast for the role.
“That made a lot of things easier. Staring at people with daggers is what I do all the time, it’s like second nature.”
He appeared in four episodes:

When they were teenagers, Wilko married Irene Knight, his childhood sweetheart.
