Former Celtic Star Arrested in Sports Betting Investigation
Police entered the luxurious home of former Celtic star Leigh Griffiths on Thursday as part of a sports betting investigation. Two other football figures have been arrested and released without charge as part of inquiries into property searches in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, and Airdrie, the Daily Record reports.
One is a 35-year-old midfielder who still plays for a Scottish league club. The other is a 37-year-old former defender who is an assistant manager at a Scottish youth team.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Following a pre-planned police operation on Thursday 1st December, three men aged 37, 35, and 32 were arrested in the areas of Bothwell, Bonnyrigg, and Airdrie in connection with an investigation into alleged betting incident in sport”.
The three men were released without charge pending further investigation.
Officials entered the attacker’s £675,000 mansion around 7 am yesterday. More than 10 officials are believed to have visited the four-bedroom property, which is on a quiet cul-de-sac in the luxury development. Uniformed police officers and CID agents reportedly participated in the search of the home, which is currently up for sale.
The operation reportedly lasted about two and a half hours, with police leaving the scene around 9:30 a.m. Police also used flashlights to scan vehicles parked on the street. Sources say residents of the upscale neighborhood were shocked by the heavy police presence.
Football Career
Born in Leith, Edinburgh, the striker scored 123 goals in 261 games for Celtic during his eight-year tenure at Celtic Park. He has also played for Hibs, Livingston, Dundee, and Falkirk. He also played for the England team Wolverhampton Wanderers and became a favorite with many members of the Army Tartan.
One of his best performances in Scotland came when he put two free-kicks into the net of now-Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart in a 2-2 draw with England at Hampden Park.
He was also a key player in the first Scotland team to reach a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France by securing a place at Euro 2020. He scored the first penalty in the penalty shoot-out against Serbia that led Steve Clarke’s men to victory in the tournament.
