A former New Jersey police officer broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and shot her before committing suicide, according to local prosecutors.
The gruesome murder-suicide was uncovered on Monday when authorities found the bodies of retired Atlantic City police officer William Beattie and his ex Erin Gatier during a welfare check at their home, the Gloucester District Attorney’s Office reportedly said Tuesday night.
Beattie entered the South Jersey home where he fatally shot the mother of two and then himself, prosecutors said, the Atlantic City Press reported. They were both 47 years old. A colleague of Gatier’s a few years ago said Gatier told him Beattie was causing trouble.
“She admitted to me that he was a nuisance, that he was a very bossy person, and that he wouldn’t let her speak to anyone who he felt posed any kind of threat to him,” former colleague Matt Greenberg testified Pennsylvania of the newspaper.
“It was an abusive relationship, not physically but mentally.”
According to state records, Beattie was forced to retire from the force more than a decade ago due to “accidental disability.” The press reported that a GoFundMe page, started by friends to raise money for Gautier’s funeral expenses, said her loss would make the world “less bright”.
“Erin left two beautiful children burdened with unimaginable decisions and expenses,” the post reads.
