Pakistan Railways Hikes Fares To Cut Losses

Pakistan Railways has increased fares on Tezgam, a daily express train service, in a bid to ease the projected deficit.

It was feared that the loss of the railway following the floods would reach an all-time high and now the state railway company has increased Tezgam’s economy ticket from Rawalpindi to Karachi from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500.

The Rawalpindi to Lahore train ticket has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 950 while the Jafar Express fare from Rawalpindi to Quetta has increased from Rs 2,860 to Rs 3,700.

Railroads are demanding the return of private-sector trains for financial incentives.

In addition to increasing fares for three trains, Pakistan Railways also wants the return of Maher Express, Bahauddin Zakaria Express, Farid Express, and Bilal Express, which were previously outsourced to the private sector.

The unprecedented flooding caused massive casualties to Pakistan Railways and damaged railway infrastructure, prompting the suspension of several operations.
