A British Former Soldier Died in Ukraine
A British soldier was killed in Ukraine after traveling to Ukraine to help fight Russia.
Simon Lingard, a British soldier who served in the British special forces, died on Monday. He would have been the third British citizen to die in the Ukraine conflict. His family said the father of two, who was a veteran of multiple deployments in Afghanistan for the British Army, died fighting for beliefs close to his heart.
Lingard, also known as “Grimmy” and referred to as a “warrior” by his friends, is said to have fought alongside Ukrainian troops on the front lines for several months after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Jackson, his son, posted on Facebook that his father died after Russian soldiers attacked him in Ukraine.
Lingard, a former machine gunner, was killed by Russian artillery fire in the ditch where he was hiding.
He was part of a group of British volunteers defending Bakhmut east of Donetsk in Ukraine.
The attack also wounded two other British.
Tributes Paid in Honor of Simon Lingard
Jackson’s son Jackson wrote on Facebook: “After years of devoting his time to protecting our nation, my father still believed in himself and decided to leave the country to save the Ukrainian people from the Russian military protection.”
“I am heartbroken to report that Dad was killed in action with his troops. He was a true hero loved by many.”
“I cannot express how much we miss and will miss him. But I am comforted that he carried on with what his heart desired and surrounded him with friends.”
“I love your father, I am very proud.”
According to the comrades, a Russian shell hit their trench directly.
He was part of a group of British volunteers who defended Bakhmut, Donetsk’s most famous city, against Russian invasions.
Stacey Longworth Mr. Lingard’s ex-wife and mother of Jackson, 17, and Keane, 13, told The Evening Standard: “He should be known as a hero.”
“I’m incredibly proud to have known him. Simon was a real soldier and a hero.”
Kieren, a former colleague, wrote on Facebook: “Absolutely burned out”; Whether he was an exceptional soldier with a great sense of humor is sometimes questionable.
“He is a man I am proud to have served with 2 para. He then transferred to the SFSG and served on various tours in Afghanistan.”
“After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he did not hesitate to go to war for them. I’m sure his knowledge, experience, and mentoring skills helped the Ukrainian military push the Russians back to where they are today.”
“I am also confident that the lessons he will pass on to those who fight at his side will help win this war.”
