WASHINGTON loses a football icon with the death of Dave Butz.

Butz, a two-time Super Bowl champion, died at the age of 72 after receiving hospice care, according to 106.7 The Fan.

Butz, a 290-pound, 6-foot-7, was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round of the 1973 draft at Purdue.

The hulking defenseman left St. Louis after two seasons and moved to Washington, where he continued to play for the rest of his career.

Butz made 203 appearances there, finishing with 59 sacks, two interceptions, and six fumble recoveries.

1983 was his best season when he had 11.5 sacks, reached the Pro Bowl, and was named a first-team All-Pro.

Butz eventually left Washington after spending fourteen years thereafter the 1988 campaign at the age of 38.

Coach Joe Gibbs said, according to NBC Sports, “When I think of Dave, I think of all the spectacular plays he’s made for us over the years.” This was discussed after leaving the game.

“I remember playing for the New York Jets two years ago after being discharged from the hospital. After making one of the biggest plays in the game, he returned to the hospital.”

The commanders tweeted Friday that they were ‘heartbroken’ after the news of Butz’s death. Butz was a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team in the 1980s, a member of the Washington Ring of Fame, and a member of its top 90 lists.

Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann also expressed his condolences, writing, “A close friend passed away today. Doug Butz used to bike to games with Dave Mark Mosley a true gentle giant. Peace be with you, dear friend.”
