Pakistan Plans To Roll Out 5G in 3 Cities By 2023

An official document from the Ministry of Information and Telecommunications (MOITT) shows that the government plans to roll out 5G in Pakistan by 2023. The rollout will begin in the country’s three major cities, including Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore.

Don’t get too excited just yet, however, as the government forecasts that only 4% of Pakistan’s total population will have access to 5G technology by 2025, with 65% of the people using 4G by then.

According to the document, the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) predicted that more than half of Pakistan’s population would use 4G by the end of 2022. Those predictions turned out to be true, but are still three years behind schedule. the rest of the world.

4G adoption rates have been significantly slower than the rest of the world, but growth is expected to pick up in the coming years.

5G will be rolled out in Pakistan in 2023 but will account for a very small number of connections in the following years.

Mobile internet is growing in Pakistan, but there is still a long way to go. Last month, the total number of mobile broadband users reached 123 million and the market penetration was 51%. The share of mobile broadband users in the total number of mobile subscribers continues to increase every year.

According to GSMA figures, the number of 4G users accounted for 50% of the total number of cellular connections worldwide in 2019. 82% of the population in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) had a 4G connection and more than 90% used 3G. These countries took about 7 years to reach 80% of 4G coverage and 10 years for 3G.

It is clear that over time even low-income countries will begin to adopt next-generation telecommunications technology at a faster rate. Therefore, it is expected that the rollout of 5G technology in Pakistan will take less time compared to 4G.
