Prime Minister orders inquiry into increased sales tax for retailers
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday suspended the collection of the flat-rate sales tax on utility bills and ordered the formulation of a new mechanism.
The Prime Minister has also ordered an investigation into the imposition of a higher VAT rate on electricity bills than agreed for retailers.
He issued these guidelines while chairing a meeting to review electricity tariffs and the collection of flat sales tax on utility bills.
The Prime Minister called for dealer representatives to be involved in the consultation process before a decision is made on charging dealer taxes on invoice.

The Prime Minister decided that the government would take all measures to protect the poor economically and instructed the relevant agencies and ministries to develop an effective mechanism to reduce electricity tariffs for the poor without delay.
The meeting was attended by Energy Minister Khurram Dastagir, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail, Minister of State for Oil Dr. Musadik Malik, Chairman of the Federal Tax Office, responsible federal secretaries and other high-ranking officials took part.
